Mike Safley
Mr. Safley was born and raised in Oregon. He attended the University of Oregon
and served in the U.S. Navy Seabees, doing two tours of duty in Vietnam.
Mike Safley was elected president of the fledgling Alpaca Owners and Breeders
Association (AOBA) in 1990 and the Alpaca Registry (ARI) in 1996. While
serving as president of AOBA, he conceived of and became the first editor for
Alpacas magazine. He has been instrumental in the development of policies and
practices for both AOBA and The Alpaca Registry, Inc. (ARI). Mike has written
several brochures for the alpaca industry which continue to be printed by AOBA
today including: "The Alpaca Investment," "Fleece to Fashion"
and "Alpacas the
Color" brochure. He is also the author of Alpacas: Synthesis of a Miracle,
Ideal Alpacas from Myth to Reality, The Alpaca Shepherd, and The Alpaca
Chronicles.
Over the last 20 years, Mike has conducted seminars and lectures worldwide to
audiences in England, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United States, and Peru.
He has been a judge at alpaca shows in the United States, England, Australia,
Canada, and Peru. The major shows include the AOBA National, MAPACA, The All
American Futurity, British Futurity, Alpaca Western Extravaganza, The North
American Alpaca Show, The Great Western Alpaca Show, The Kentucky Classic,
Estes Park Wool Market, and the Santa Fe Alpaca Show.

Charlene Friedman
Charlene is co-owner with her husband, Ed, of Mountain Edge Alpacas, a multi-faceted
alpaca breeding business. They have been breeding alpacas since 1995.
Charlene attended the IAJS (International Alpaca Judging School), which was
founded and operated by Maggie (Krieger) Snee and Dr. Julio Sumar, in the
Altiplano in October 2001. Charlene is certified by AOBA (Alpacas Owners and
Breeders Association) to judge Suri Halter, Huacaya Halter, Performance and Fleece.
She is the former Chairman of AOBA’s Education and AOBA’s Show Rules Committees
and presently serves on the AOBA Judge Advisory Committee. Charlene also sits on
the IAJS council.
Charlene is the mother of two children, Ty Stewart, 34, of Las Vegas, Nevada
and Salem Bartlett, 37, of Wilmington, North Carolina. Her first grandchild
was born in November 2007 and another is expected in January 2008. She lives
with her husband, Ed, five dogs and their herd of alpacas in Boalsburg, PA on
their 175-acre farm overlooking Mount Nittany.

Amanda VandenBosch
Amanda VandenBosch is a Senior AOBA Halter & Fleece Judge and an Alpaca
Judge Trainer and Instructor in the USA. Amanda qualified as an International
Alpaca Judge trained in Peru at the International Alpaca Judging School (IAJS)
in 2000. She has judged shows in the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand
and Australia. She has had the great honor of judging National Shows in the
USA, Australia, United Kingdom and New Zealand, so truly has an International
perspective. Amanda has a true love for judging and teaching.
Amanda travels worldwide judging alpacas and giving presentations and workshops.
Her "hands on" workshops are much sought after. Amanda also travels
to the United Kingdom and teaches for the British Alpaca Society.
Amanda has spent many hours volunteering over the years at AOBA National
Conferences, regional events and has participated on numerous committees.
She is a past President of Calpaca, a Regional Affiliate and past Chair of
the Judges Advisory Committee (JAC). She has had the opportunity to work with
many of the world’s leading experts in the field of alpacas.
Amanda is a native of the United Kingdom. She traveled and worked in England
and Australia with thoroughbred horses, before she settled in the USA in 1991.
With her husband Vince and two sons Cody (6) Hunter (2 1/2) they raise both
huacayas and suris at their farm "Flying Dutchman Alpacas" in Bend, Oregon.
